Why Hialeah city water is often already soft enough
Miami-Dade County's 2024 Water Quality Report says water from the Hialeah Water Treatment Plant is treated similarly to the Alexander Orr, Jr. plant, where lime treatment reduces hardness. Separately, the Hialeah Reverse Osmosis plant forces brackish Floridan Aquifer water through membranes that remove salts and dissolved minerals.
Put together, a Hialeah home on city water starts in a better spot than a home pumping raw groundwater. That is why Jorge tests hardness before a softener ever comes up.
When a Hialeah home may still want one
- A test at your tap shows hardness high enough to cause scale.
- White buildup keeps returning on faucets, shower glass and in the kettle.
- Your tank water heater has scale buildup.
- You are on a private well, where hardness often comes with iron or sulfur odor. See well water systems.
Softening for Hialeah businesses
Hialeah is full of small businesses: restaurants and cafeterias, laundromats, car washes, auto shops, gyms, schools and offices. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for businesses like these. In a commercial setting, water runs through equipment all day, so even moderate hardness adds up over time as scale in:
- Commercial dishwashers, ice machines and coffee equipment.
- Washers and dryers in a laundry.
- Pressure washers and spot-free rinse systems at a car wash.
- Water heaters and boilers.
Business systems are sized to water volume, so the test and a look at your equipment come first.
How ion exchange works, briefly
Hard water flows through resin beads that hold on to calcium and magnesium and release sodium or potassium. When the resin is full, the softener regenerates with brine from its salt tank and rinses to a drain. You need room for two tanks, a drain and an outlet. Salt-free conditioners work differently; see salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
Softener or filter?
A softener does not change disinfectant taste or smell. If that is what bothers you, the answer is whole-home filtration. If the test shows both issues, the two can be combined. Read water softener vs. water filter.
