What the town reports
The Town of Highland Beach treats deep Floridan Aquifer water with reverse osmosis, which removes most dissolved minerals. Its 2025 report lists fluoride at 0.023 ppm, attributed to erosion of natural deposits, with no violation. The treatment steps the town lists are antiscalant, phosphate, degasification, acid, liquid lime and chlorine; fluoride is not among them.
The number comes from a sample taken in October 2023; inorganic contaminants are monitored on a multi-year schedule allowed by the state, which the town notes in its report.
Highland Beach next to its neighbors
For context, other membrane-treated utilities in Palm Beach County report natural fluoride too. Seacoast Utility Authority, which serves North Palm Beach, says it does not fluoridate and reports natural fluoride below 0.2 ppm. Highland Beach's 0.023 ppm is lower still, which is what you would expect from water that has been through reverse osmosis. If you moved here from a city that used to fluoridate, the difference is real.
If you want less fluoride
- Reverse osmosis under the sink is the common method; check its listing under NSF/ANSI 58 for fluoride reduction.
- Ordinary carbon filters generally do not reduce fluoride.
- Whole-home filters are designed for chlorine, not fluoride.
Bottled water varies in fluoride too; the label or the bottler can tell you.
Distillation is another method some people use at home, though it is slower and uses more energy than RO.
Health questions
We do not make health claims for or against fluoride. Talk with your dentist or doctor about fluoride for your family, including children.
What RO does at your sink
A home RO membrane reduces many dissolved solids, fluoride among them. Because Highland Beach water has already been through RO at the plant, the reading at your tap starts low. Jorge measures total dissolved solids before and after the membrane so you can see the change rather than take it on faith.
Alkaline stage note
An alkaline RO system adds minerals back after the membrane for taste. Check the model's performance data to see what it adds and what it reduces. See alkaline vs. standard RO.
See your numbers
Jorge tests total dissolved solids before and after RO so you can see what the system is doing. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974. See under-sink RO in Highland Beach.
