Chlorine vs. chloramine, briefly
Chlorine is the classic disinfectant. Chloramine is chlorine combined with ammonia, which lasts longer in pipes and is harder for plain carbon to break down. Delray Beach and Boynton Beach, to the north, list chloramines in their reports. Hillsboro Beach lists chlorine. If you have moved here from a chloramine city, you may notice a different smell, often described as more like a pool, especially right after a long run of the tap.
What a chlorine filter should be certified for
- NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetic chlorine reduction, meaning taste and odor.
- NSF/ANSI 53 covers health-related claims for specific contaminants, such as certain disinfection byproducts. A filter certified for chlorine taste is not automatically certified for byproducts.
- Check the exact model number on the certifier's listing.
For a whole-home system, ask what flow rate the certification was tested at. A system rated for a small flow may not perform the same at a big house's peak demand.
Disinfection byproducts in the town's numbers
When chlorine meets natural organic matter it forms byproducts. The 2025 report lists total trihalomethanes at a highest locational running annual average of 67.2 ppb at 1236 Hillsboro Mile, under the limit of 80, with individual results from 39.7 to 84.8. The report says one sample reached 84.8 ppb but no violation occurred because annual averages at all sites stayed at or below the limit. Haloacetic acids averaged 19 ppb, under the 60 limit.
If byproducts are part of your reason for filtering, choose a model whose certification names them, and read the town's next report when it comes out.
Whole-home, under-sink, or both
- Whole-home carbon: chlorine reduced at every tap and shower.
- Under-sink RO: chlorine reduced by the carbon stage, plus dissolved solids at the kitchen faucet.
- Both: common in single-family homes; condos often start with RO.
Living Water's Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring city water systems are described by Living Water as removing chlorine and chloramine. More in choosing a filter for chloramine and chlorine.
Upkeep that keeps a chlorine filter working
Carbon has a finite capacity. Once it is used up, chlorine passes through and the taste comes back gradually, so many owners do not notice the change. Ask for the media or cartridge interval in writing, based on your household's water use and the chlorine level measured at your tap. For a whole-home tank, ask whether the media is replaced on site and what that visit involves. For an under-sink system, the carbon prefilter also protects the RO membrane from chlorine damage, so skipping its change shortens membrane life.
Measure before you buy
Jorge measures chlorine at your tap, which can differ from the town average depending on where you are along the line and how long water sits in your plumbing. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974 for a free test.
