Why RO works well on Hillsboro Mile
Much of Hillsboro Beach is condominium buildings and homes along a narrow strip between the Intracoastal and the ocean. Many owners cannot or do not want to change a building's main line. An RO system sits in the kitchen cabinet, needs a cold-water connection and a drain, and serves one faucet. No association-level plumbing project is required in most units, though it is still worth checking your building's rules.
What the stages do
- Sediment prefilter: catches particles.
- Carbon prefilter: reduces chlorine, which the town uses for disinfection and which can damage RO membranes.
- RO membrane: reduces dissolved solids. The town's 2025 report lists sodium at 15.7 ppm and fluoride at 0.56 ppm; RO is a common method for reducing both.
- Post-filter and alkaline stage: polish taste and add minerals back to raise pH.
For any specific contaminant, check that the exact model is certified for it under NSF/ANSI 58.
Alkaline vs. standard RO
Standard RO water tends to be slightly acidic and some people find it flat. An alkaline stage adds minerals such as calcium and magnesium back for taste. It is a taste preference, not a health promise. Compare in alkaline vs. standard reverse osmosis.
Living with an RO system
- Filters: prefilters and post-filters are replaced on a schedule; the membrane lasts longer. Ask for the schedule in writing.
- Drain water: RO sends some water to the drain while it makes clean water. Ask about the ratio for the model you are quoted.
- Tank or tankless: tank models store water; tankless models need more space under the sink for the unit but no tank. See tankless vs. tank RO.
- Fridge line: many systems can also feed an ice maker.
Seasonal owners and RO
If you spend part of the year away, water sits in the RO tank and lines while you are gone. Ask how the system should be flushed when you return, and whether a filter change makes sense at the start of each season. A short routine, such as draining the storage tank once and running the faucet for a few minutes, keeps the first glass tasting right. Jorge explains this for the specific model he quotes.
