What the town's report says
- The report's opening paragraph says the water is chlorinated for disinfection and fluoridated for dental health.
- The results table lists fluoride at 0.56 ppm, sampled in September 2024, against an EPA limit of 4 ppm.
- Fluoride also occurs naturally in groundwater, and the report lists erosion of natural deposits among its likely sources.
Because the sample predates the state law and the report text may describe longstanding practice, the cleanest answer comes from the Water Department: 954-941-8937.
What changed in Florida in 2025
The Florida Senate's summary of CS/CS/CS/SB 700 says the bill prohibits the use of any additive to a public water supply that is not for the explicit purpose of improving water quality, effective July 1, 2025. Natural fluoride in groundwater remains and continues to be reported.
Neutral on the debate, practical on the filter
Living Waters does not take a side on fluoride. Some people want it; some prefer less. This page is for people who have decided they want to reduce it and need to know what works.
- Reverse osmosis is the common household method. See under-sink RO in Hillsboro Beach.
- Activated alumina is another media used for fluoride.
- Standard carbon filters, including most pitchers and fridge filters, are not designed for fluoride.
Certification check
For an RO system, look for NSF/ANSI 58 certification that lists fluoride reduction, and confirm the exact model number on the certifier's listing. For other filter types, the listing should name fluoride specifically. A claim on a box is not the same as a certification. More in carbon filtration vs. reverse osmosis.
Fluoride and the rest of your drinking water
An RO system does not single out fluoride. It reduces many dissolved solids at once, including sodium, which the town's report lists at 15.7 ppm. That is why most people who choose RO for fluoride also notice a change in taste. An alkaline stage can add minerals back afterward. If you only want the town's chlorine taste gone and are fine with fluoride, a carbon filter is the simpler choice.
Testing and next steps
A certified lab can measure fluoride precisely. Jorge's free in-home test covers dissolved solids, chlorine, hardness and pH, and he can show you how an RO changes dissolved solids at your tap.
