Spots are not always hardness
- Hardness (calcium and magnesium) leaves chalky white scale, especially on hot surfaces.
- Other dissolved solids, such as sodium, can leave a light film when water evaporates. The town's report lists sodium at 15.7 ppm.
- Outdoor glass on Hillsboro Mile also collects salt from sea spray, which is not a water supply issue at all.
Read your test like this
| Result | Likely fix |
|---|---|
| Low hardness, spots on shower glass | Squeegee, rinse aid, better ventilation |
| Low hardness, spots on drinking glasses | Rinse aid; RO water for final rinses or coffee makers |
| Meaningful hardness | Softener sized from the number |
| Scale in an old water heater | Flush the heater; the scale may predate the current supply |
Softener vs. salt-free conditioner
An ion-exchange softener removes hardness minerals. A salt-free conditioner changes how minerals behave so they scale less, without removing them. Neither is needed if your test shows low hardness. Compare in salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants when a test supports one.
Where scale costs money
In homes, scale mostly affects water heaters, faucet aerators and shower heads. In buildings and businesses it affects commercial dishwashers, ice machines, boilers and laundry equipment. For a building or restaurant, a measured hardness number and the equipment manufacturer's requirements decide whether softening is worth it. See softeners in Hillsboro Beach.
Cleaning what is already there
Mild acid cleaners such as diluted white vinegar loosen mineral spots on glass and chrome. Test on a small area first, and follow the fixture maker's guidance for coated glass and finishes. Soak shower heads and faucet aerators in the same solution a few times a year to clear the small openings where scale collects first. Prevention is cheaper than replacement: drying glass after each shower stops most spots before they form.
Oceanfront glass needs its own routine
Balcony doors and windows facing the ocean collect a salt haze that looks a lot like water spots. Rinsing with fresh water and drying with a squeegee or microfiber cloth handles both salt and mineral spots. A water treatment system cannot do anything about spray from the ocean, and nobody should sell you one for that reason.
