Where the stains show up tells you a lot
- Fan-shaped marks on walls, fences and pavers: sprinklers on an irrigation well.
- Rust rings in toilets and tubs, orange laundry: indoor water from a private well.
- Brief brown water after main work: sediment stirred up in pipes. Homestead has water main projects along Krome and Flagler Avenues; run cold water until it clears and contact HPS Water if it does not.
Iron on agricultural and rural lots
The Redland, northwest of Homestead, is described in Miami-Dade planning documents as an agricultural area of cropland, groves, nurseries and pasture, and county planners note limited infrastructure in parts of it. Properties there commonly rely on wells for irrigation, and some for the house. Biscayne Aquifer groundwater can carry dissolved iron that stains anything it touches once it oxidizes.
Both Miami-Dade and the City of Homestead apply their landscape irrigation rules to private wells as well as utility water. Under Homestead's ordinance, odd-numbered addresses water on Wednesday and/or Saturday and even-numbered addresses on Thursday and/or Sunday.
Treatment paths
| Situation | Typical approach |
|---|---|
| Irrigation well only | Iron filtration on the irrigation line, sized to the pump, plus redirecting heads away from walls |
| Drinking water well | A whole-home well system configured from the test, often handling iron, sulfur and hardness together |
| Iron with sulfur smell | Oxidation and filtration chosen for both |
Living Water configures well treatment from your well's test; see the well water system page.
Keeping new stains from forming
Treating the water is the lasting fix, but a few adjustments slow the damage meanwhile:
- Re-aim or swap sprinkler heads that hit walls, screens, fences and pavers.
- Check for zones that overspray the driveway or street.
- Water only on your allowed days and early or late, so less water sits and dries in the sun.
- On pool decks, rinse splash zones with clean city water where you have it.
Clean existing stains with a product made for rust on that surface, following the label, after the source is under control. Otherwise you are cleaning the same wall every month.
Backflow and auxiliary wells
If your property has both city water and a well, Homestead's new Cross-Connection Control Program is relevant: the city lists irrigation systems and auxiliary wells among the links between drinking water and non-potable sources that need protection. Ask about backflow when planning any well treatment.
Get the iron measured
Jorge checks iron at the wellhead or spigot and recommends treatment only if it fits. Related: well water treatment and rotten-egg smells in Homestead. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974.
