Hardness is the sizing number
A softener's capacity is matched to how much hardness it has to remove between regenerations. Because Homestead's report lists regulated substances rather than hardness, the number has to come from your tap. A quick reading avoids the two common mistakes: an oversized unit that wastes salt and water, and an undersized one that runs out before it regenerates.
City water vs. well water
| HPS city water | Private well | |
|---|---|---|
| Treatment before your house | Chlorinated at Wittkop Park or Harris Field | None |
| What the softener faces | Hardness, with chlorine present | Hardness, often with iron, sulfur or sediment |
| Design impact | A softener, sometimes paired with carbon filtration | Often pretreatment so iron does not foul the resin |

Other factors on the quote
- Household size and bathrooms, which set daily water use.
- Control valve: demand-based regeneration versus a timer.
- Install location: garage, utility room or outdoors, with a drain and power nearby.
- Irrigation bypass so the lawn is not softened.
- Backflow: where city water and a well share a property, Homestead's Cross-Connection Control Program may be relevant.
Ownership costs to ask about
- How much salt or potassium the unit will use at your measured hardness.
- How often it regenerates and how much water each cycle uses.
- Expected resin life, especially on well water with iron.
- Included service visits and warranty on the tank, resin and valve.
