What the city report does and does not tell you
Homestead's 2025 Water Quality Report explains that water is pumped from the Biscayne Aquifer at two well fields, chlorinated and stored in elevated towers. It lists detected contaminants and disinfectant levels, but it does not publish a hardness value, and it does not describe a softening step at the plants.
That is normal for a water quality report, which focuses on regulated contaminants. Hardness is not a health standard; it is about scale, spots and how soap behaves. You can ask HPS Water for any hardness data it has, or simply have Jorge measure it at your faucet.
Signs that point to a softener
- White crust on showerheads, aerators and the edge of the toilet tank.
- Cloudy film on shower glass that returns days after cleaning. See hard water spots in Homestead.
- A tank water heater that rumbles or a tankless unit that needs frequent descaling.
- Soap and shampoo that do not lather well.
How ion exchange works
Inside the softener tank, resin beads hold sodium or potassium. As hard water flows through, the beads trade those for calcium and magnesium. When the resin is full, the system rinses itself with brine from the salt tank and starts again. A demand-based valve regenerates by actual water use rather than on a fixed calendar.
Living Water installs ion-exchange softening for homes and for businesses like restaurants, laundries, schools, car washes, gyms and offices. Homestead's farm-related businesses, nurseries and packing operations with water-using equipment can also be candidates, sized to daily use.
On a well? Softening is one piece
Well water around Homestead and the Redland gets no utility treatment. Hardness often comes with iron or a sulfur smell, and the order of treatment matters: iron can foul softener resin if it is not handled correctly. A well system is configured from the well's test. See well water treatment in Homestead.
Softener, conditioner or filter?
If your main complaint is chlorine taste, you need a filter, not a softener; see softener vs. filter in Homestead. If you are weighing salt-free options, read salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener. For pricing factors, see water softener cost in Homestead.
