HOMESTEAD · WHOLE-HOME FILTRATION

Whole-Home Water Filtration in Homestead

A whole-home filter on a Homestead house treats water at every faucet, shower and appliance, right after it enters from the HPS Water line. Homestead disinfects with chlorine, which carbon-based whole-home media reduce well, so the main benefit here is removing chlorine taste and odor throughout the home. Living Water describes its Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring systems as removing chlorine and chloramine. On a Redland or rural well, the job is different and starts with a well test.

What changes, room by room

  • Kitchen: no chlorine taste in coffee, cooking water or ice.
  • Bathrooms: less chlorine smell in hot showers, where steam carries it.
  • Laundry: water without disinfectant odor.

A whole-home filter does not replace HPS Water's treatment or change the fact that the water already meets drinking water standards. It is about comfort and taste in every room instead of one faucet.

Why Homestead is a different case from WASD areas

Homestead's Water Quality Report lists chlorine as the disinfectant added at the Wittkop Park and Harris Field plants. WASD, which serves much of the rest of the county, uses chloramine, which is more stubborn for carbon. For a Homestead home on city water, that usually means standard whole-home carbon media handle the disinfectant comfortably, which can affect what size and type of system makes sense. Jorge measures the chlorine at your tap so the system is sized to real numbers.

If you live just outside the city on WASD's water, ask which disinfectant your system uses; WASD's report explains it.

Homes on wells need a different plan

Some homes around Homestead, especially in the agricultural Redland, draw from a private well. That water has had no disinfection or filtration, and iron, hydrogen sulfide or hardness may need treating before any carbon stage. A city-water filter on a well can clog or fail early. See well water treatment in Homestead and the well water system page.

Install details Jorge checks

  1. Where the HPS line and meter connect to the house, and room for the equipment.
  2. Whether the irrigation line splits off first, so lawn water is not filtered.
  3. Whether the house has a backflow device. Homestead is launching a Cross-Connection Control Program for water users required to have one, and irrigation systems and auxiliary wells are among the cross-connections it lists.
  4. Association rules for townhomes in Homestead's newer communities.

What to ask before you buy

  • Which exact model is proposed, and which NSF/ANSI listing supports each claim?
  • What flow rate is it sized for, and is that enough for your bathrooms running at once?
  • How often is the media replaced, and what does service involve?
  • Does the quote include the bypass valve, fittings and the first service?

Answers in writing make it easy to compare proposals. Jorge provides an itemized quote after the free test.

Pair it with drinking water treatment

Whole-home filtration and under-sink alkaline RO do different jobs, and many households use both. To decide, read whole-house filtration vs. reverse osmosis. For pricing factors, see water filtration cost in Homestead.

Common questions

Does Homestead tap water have chloramine?

Homestead's Water Quality Report lists chlorine as the disinfectant. Chloramine is used by WASD in other parts of Miami-Dade.

Is a whole-home filter necessary in Homestead?

No. HPS Water meets drinking water standards. A whole-home system is a choice for chlorine taste and odor at every tap and shower.

Can I use a city water filter on my Redland well?

Usually not on its own. Well water may carry iron, sulfur or hardness that need treating first, so well systems are configured from the well's test.

Does the filter go on the irrigation line too?

Normally no. Irrigation usually splits off before the system so you are not filtering lawn water.
