JUPITER · IRON STAINS

Orange & Rust Stains From Water in Jupiter

Orange stains on Jupiter walls, driveways and pool decks almost always come from groundwater, usually a sprinkler system fed by an irrigation well, or a private household well like those in Jupiter Farms. Iron dissolved in the water oxidizes when sprayed and leaves rust marks. Town water is membrane-treated, so indoor rust on Town water more often points to old pipes or the water heater, which the Town's own report describes.

Follow the sprinkler arc

If the stain matches the spray pattern of a sprinkler head, the irrigation water is the cause. The University of Florida IFAS notes that iron can stain at levels as low as 0.3 parts per million. Every watering adds a layer.

Many Jupiter communities irrigate with reclaimed IQ Water from the Loxahatchee River District rather than wells. If your neighborhood is on reuse water and you still see orange, ask your HOA or the district what feeds your system before buying equipment.

Indoors on Town water

The Town's 2025 report explains that rust or iron can build up in household plumbing and cause brown or yellow water, stained fixtures and laundry, and a metallic taste. Its advice: if this happens regularly, especially after water sits, have a plumber check for old galvanized pipe; if there is none, flush the water heater and home plumbing at least twice a year. A filter at the main does not fix corroding pipes after it.

The annual free chlorine maintenance can also loosen deposits in mains; brief discoloration then is usually temporary.

Private wells in Jupiter Farms

Jupiter Farms homes supply their own drinking water from wells, according to the Town's water supply plan. If you see orange in toilets, sinks or laundry, iron is in your household water. Treatment is built from the well's test, often together with hardness and sulfur odor, and the order of equipment matters.

Options

  • Iron filtration on the irrigation line, sized to the pump's flow.
  • Oxidation followed by filtration for higher iron levels.
  • Whole-house iron treatment for a household well, ahead of any softener.
  • Re-aiming sprinkler heads away from walls, pavers and pool decks.

Filtration prevents new stains. Existing stains need a rust-stain cleaner.

What gets tested

  • Iron and manganese at the well or irrigation line.
  • pH and hardness.
  • Pump flow, for sizing.
  • Sulfur odor.
  • On Town water: whether the color comes from one fixture, hot water only, or everywhere.

Common questions

Why are my Jupiter walls turning orange?

Usually sprinklers fed by groundwater with dissolved iron. The stain follows the spray pattern.

Does Jupiter's Town water cause rust stains?

Town water is membrane-treated. Indoor rust on Town water more often comes from old plumbing or the water heater, as the Town's report explains.

How do I fix stains from my irrigation well?

Iron filtration on the irrigation line, sized to the well, plus re-aiming heads. Clean old stains with a rust remover.

Can a softener remove iron?

Only small amounts, and it can foul the resin. Dedicated iron treatment is usually needed.

Is the test free?

Yes, with no obligation.
