Two kinds of wells
| Household well | Irrigation well | |
|---|---|---|
| Where common | Jupiter Farms and other unserved areas | Yards and some communities |
| Main concerns | Bacteria, nitrate, iron, hardness, sulfur | Iron staining, sulfur smell, sediment |
| Treatment goal | Water for the whole house | Protect walls, pavers and sprinklers |
How the Town's wells compare
Jupiter Utilities also draws groundwater, but from 63 wells into two aquifers, and treats it with reverse osmosis and nanofiltration before adding chloramine. A household well taps groundwater with none of that. That is not a judgment about well water; it means the owner is the one deciding what treatment fits.
Florida DOH testing guidance
- Test a drinking well for bacteria and nitrate at least once a year.
- Retest after flooding, repairs, or any change in taste, color or odor.
- Use a certified lab for bacteria.
The Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County runs an Environmental Laboratory that tests drinking water for total coliform and E. coli; call 561-840-4500 for sampling instructions.
Building a well system
- Sediment filtration.
- Iron and hydrogen sulfide reduction.
- An ion-exchange softener if hardness is high.
- Under-sink RO for drinking water.
- Disinfection equipment if a lab test shows a bacteria concern.
Living Water configures well treatment from the well's test; see well water systems and UV vs. RO for well water.
Irrigation wells and reuse water
Some Jupiter neighborhoods irrigate with reclaimed IQ Water from the Loxahatchee River District instead of wells. Where a yard does run on a well, iron is the usual complaint. See orange stains in Jupiter and sulfur smell.
Buying a home with a well
If you are buying in Jupiter Farms or another area outside the Town's lines, ask the seller for any recent lab results and the age of the well and pump. Then test for yourself: a well that looked fine years ago can change after storms, flooding or nearby construction. Knowing the iron, hardness and odor up front also tells you how much equipment the house will need.
What Jorge checks
- Iron, hardness, pH and dissolved solids.
- Odor on hot and cold.
- Pump flow and pressure.
- Whether the well serves the house, the yard or both.
