Why Kendall sprinklers leave orange marks
Kendall has many single-family homes with lawns, and some properties irrigate with a shallow well rather than metered county water. Well water has not been through WASD's plant, so whatever iron is in the groundwater comes straight out the sprinkler heads. When it dries on concrete, stucco or a screen enclosure, the iron oxidizes and leaves the classic orange fan pattern.
Miami-Dade's watering restrictions apply to private wells too: odd-numbered addresses on Wednesday and Saturday, even-numbered addresses on Thursday and Sunday, before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m. Watering only on those days also limits how often the stains are refreshed.
Pinpoint the source
- Stains only where sprinklers hit: irrigation well.
- Rust rings in toilets, tubs and laundry: drinking water from a private well, or occasionally corroding plumbing.
- Brown water after a main break or hydrant flushing: sediment stirred up in county pipes, usually temporary. Run cold water until it clears and contact WASD if it does not.
Treatment options for irrigation wells
The approach depends on how much iron is present and on other factors like pH and sulfur. Typical paths include:
- Iron filtration on the irrigation well line, sized to the pump's flow.
- Oxidation plus filtration, which converts dissolved iron into particles that can be captured.
- Adjusting sprinkler heads so they do not spray walls and walkways, which helps with any option.
Jorge measures iron at the spigot or wellhead before recommending anything. The well water system page shows how Living Water configures well treatment from the test.
Iron inside the house
If your drinking water comes from a well, iron stains are part of a bigger picture that may include hardness and sulfur smell. See well water treatment in Kendall and rotten-egg smells. On county water, persistent rust in one fixture is usually a plumbing question for a licensed plumber.
Protecting surfaces in the meantime
While you sort out the source, a few habits limit new stains: aim heads away from walls, screens and pavers; check that zones are not overspraying onto the driveway; and run the system only on your allowed days. Stain removers made for rust on concrete or stucco exist, but follow the product directions and test a small area first. Cleaning without fixing the water simply resets the clock, so the lasting answer is treating the irrigation water itself or switching the sprinklers to a source without iron.
