Why RO is popular in Kendall kitchens
Most Kendall homes drink WASD water that started in the Biscayne Aquifer and was treated at the Alexander Orr, Jr. plant. It meets standards, and many families still prefer a dedicated drinking tap for three reasons:
- Taste. RO's carbon stages handle disinfectant taste and the membrane reduces dissolved solids.
- Convenience. It replaces lugging cases of bottled water from the store.
- Specific concerns. For contaminants like PFAS, some RO systems carry certification under NSF/ANSI 58. Always check the exact model's listing; see PFAS filters in Kendall.
How a multi-stage alkaline system works
- Sediment stage catches particles.
- Carbon stages target taste and odor, including disinfectant. Ask how a given system handles chloramine specifically.
- The RO membrane separates water from most dissolved solids.
- Remineralization (alkaline) stage adds minerals back for taste and raises pH.
- Dedicated faucet on the sink so you know which water you are drinking.
Living Water's systems are alkaline RO. To compare that with a standard RO, read alkaline vs. standard reverse osmosis.
Townhomes, condos and rentals
Kendall has a large share of townhome and condo communities. Under-sink RO is usually the most practical upgrade there because it connects to the kitchen cold line and drain, without touching the building's main. Check your association's rules, and if you rent, get the owner's permission. Jorge looks at cabinet space, the drain and where the faucet can mount.
Living with RO day to day
- Filter changes happen on a schedule that depends on use and water quality. Ask for the schedule in writing.
- Wastewater: RO sends some water to the drain as part of how it works. Ask about the system's ratio.
- Flow: tank and tankless designs fill a glass differently; see tankless vs. tank RO.
For what drives the price, see reverse osmosis cost in Kendall.
RO, pitcher or fridge filter?
Pitchers and refrigerator filters are mostly carbon. They can improve taste, but they are small, slow and need frequent cartridge changes, and their performance against chloramine varies by model. An under-sink RO system adds a membrane and several stages, and it serves a dedicated faucet so you can fill pots and bottles quickly. If you are weighing those options, the Kendall drinking water system guide compares them side by side, and carbon filtration vs. reverse osmosis explains the technology.
