What PFAS are
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are chemicals used for decades in nonstick, stain-resistant and water-resistant products and in some firefighting foams. They break down very slowly, which is why they are found in water supplies across the country. The two best known are PFOA and PFOS.
Where to read Kendall's PFAS results
WASD's 2025 Water Quality Report includes a PFAS table for its main system, which is the system the Alexander Orr, Jr. plant feeds south of SW 8 Street. It lists PFOS, PFOA, PFNA, PFHxS and a Hazard Index for certain PFAS mixtures. WASD states that initial compliance monitoring for PFAS is underway and that it is taking measures to comply with the new federal limits on the schedule set by the rule.
Read the table yourself on miamidade.gov rather than relying on summaries, and note the year and the system each result applies to. Living Water does not interpret it as a safety verdict, and neither should any salesperson.
What certification actually means
- NSF/ANSI 53 covers filters, including many carbon systems, for specific health-related contaminant claims.
- NSF/ANSI 58 covers reverse osmosis systems.
- A product only counts for PFAS if its listing specifically names PFOA and PFOS reduction (or the PFAS claim you care about).
- Check the exact model number on the certifier's public listing. A brand name or a similar model is not enough.
What we will and will not tell you
Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. If PFAS is your main concern, Jorge will tell you to verify certification for any system you consider, including RO models, and he will not make claims a listing does not support. He can still help with what Living Water does offer: under-sink alkaline RO for drinking water and whole-home filtration for chloramine taste and odor.
Questions to ask before buying a PFAS filter
- What is the exact model number, and does its certification listing name PFOA and PFOS reduction?
- Under which standard, NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58, was it certified?
- What capacity is the claim based on, and when must the cartridge or membrane be replaced to keep it?
- Is the claim for the whole system as installed, or for one component?
A filter past its rated capacity no longer matches its certification, so the replacement schedule matters as much as the purchase. RO systems with an NSF/ANSI 58 PFAS listing typically depend on the membrane and pre-filters being changed on time.
If you are on a private well
Private wells are not covered by WASD's report. A certified laboratory can test well water for PFAS; ask the lab which method it uses. See well water treatment in Kendall.
