Why RO suits island condos
- Stays in your unit: no work on shared plumbing.
- Small footprint: sits under the sink.
- Addresses building factors: water in a tower passes through pumps, risers and sometimes tanks before your tap; RO treats it right where you drink it.
- Portable: renters and seasonal owners can plan around it with the owner.
The chloramine detail
WASD disinfects with chloramine, 2.5 ppm for the main system in 2025. RO membranes need protection from chlorine-based disinfectants, and chloramine is slower to break down in ordinary carbon. Ask which pre-filter is used and how often it is changed at your water use. During WASD's two-week free chlorine period each year, the same pre-filter handles chlorine easily.
Before installation in a condo
- Read your association's rules on plumbing alterations and approved contractors.
- Ask management whether a certificate of insurance is required for work in the unit.
- Check cabinet space, the cold line shutoff and a drain connection.
- Decide whether you want a line to the refrigerator or ice maker.
- Choose the faucet spot; drilling quartz or granite takes care.
Alkaline RO
Living Water's systems add an alkaline stage after the membrane to put minerals back for taste. See the compact alkaline RO and alkaline vs. standard RO.
Leak and vacancy planning
In a tower, a leak can reach the unit below. Ask about a leak stop or detector under the sink, and shut the RO supply valve if you leave the unit for the season. When you return, flush the system and follow the filter schedule.
What changes in the glass
Reverse osmosis pushes water through a membrane that holds back most dissolved solids. Carbon stages before and after handle disinfectant taste and odor. On WASD water, owners usually notice three things: the chloramine taste is gone, coffee and tea taste cleaner, and ice is clearer. The alkaline stage then adds minerals back so the water does not taste flat.
What RO does not do matters too. It treats only the faucet it feeds, not your shower. It sends some water to the drain while making clean water, so ask for the model's ratio. And any specific contaminant claim belongs to that exact model's NSF/ANSI 58 listing, not to RO as a category. If you are comparing models, see tankless vs. tank RO, since a tankless unit can save cabinet space in a small condo kitchen.
