What sets the installed price
- System design: stages, membrane capacity, tank or tankless. See tankless vs. tank RO.
- Alkaline stage: adds minerals back for taste.
- Faucet: an existing hole is simpler than drilling quartz or granite, common in island kitchens.
- Fridge or ice-maker line: routing adds work.
- Cabinet layout: tight cabinets in older units may need a compact system.
For seasonal owners, a valve that makes it easy to shut the system off between stays is worth having.
Condo building factors
Some associations ask for a certificate of insurance, limit work hours or require notice before plumbing work. None of that changes the equipment, but it can affect scheduling and what the quote should cover. Ask for these up front, and add a leak stop under the sink in a tower, where a leak can travel.
The chloramine factor
WASD's main system carried chloramine at 2.5 ppm in 2025. RO membranes must be protected from chlorine-based disinfectants, and chloramine is harder for ordinary carbon. Ask which carbon stage is used and how long it lasts at your use. A cheaper cartridge that needs changing more often can cost more over time.
Ownership costs to ask about
- Pre-filter and post-filter change intervals.
- Membrane life.
- Alkaline cartridge replacement.
- Water sent to drain per gallon produced.
- Service visits: included or billed?
See RO filter replacement cost.
Compare with bottled water
If you haul cases across the causeway or pay for delivery, run the numbers with the bottled water vs. RO calculator, including filter changes.
Questions that keep the quote honest
- What did my tap test show for chloramine and total dissolved solids?
- Which stage handles chloramine, and how long does it last at my use?
- Is the faucet installation into stone included, and who is responsible for the countertop?
- Is the fridge line included or extra?
- Is a leak stop included for a condo install?
- What paperwork will my building need, and who provides it?
An installer who answers these with specifics is quoting your kitchen, not a brochure. Red flags include health promises, claims that WASD water is not drinkable, contaminant claims without a model number and certification listing, and pressure to sign the same day. Compare quotes with how to compare water treatment quotes.
