What PFAS are
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) have been used in non-stick cookware, stain- and water-resistant materials, food packaging and some firefighting foams. They break down very slowly. EPA's PFAS drinking water pages explain the federal limits and their timelines.
What Seacoast's report shows
Seacoast's report includes an unregulated contaminants table for its treatment plants and distribution system. PFAS samples taken in January 2024 and July 2024 are listed as ND (not detected). The report also states Seacoast's view that its reverse osmosis and nanofiltration processes remove these contaminants. Questions go to Seacoast's laboratory at 561-627-2900.
Not detected means below the laboratory's reporting level for that method, which is the standard way these results are published.
If you want a PFAS filter anyway
- Look for NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis) certification that specifically lists PFOA and PFOS reduction.
- Match the exact model number on the certifier's listing.
- Replace cartridges on schedule.
We do not claim that Living Water's systems remove PFAS. Ask for the certification listing of any model you consider, including ours.
Private wells
A private well is not covered by Seacoast's testing. A certified lab using EPA methods is the only way to know whether PFAS are present. See well water in Lake Park.
Reading results when you see them
PFAS results are usually reported in nanograms per liter (ng/L), which is the same as parts per trillion. EPA's rule set limits of 4.0 ng/L for PFOA and PFOS, and the Seacoast table lists that 4.0 figure as the MCL column. A result of ND means the lab did not detect PFAS at its reporting level. If a future report shows a detection, compare it with EPA's limits and ask Seacoast for context.
EPA's UCMR 5 page explains how utilities nationwide sampled for 29 PFAS and how to find the data.
Questions to ask Seacoast
- When is the next PFAS sampling round?
- Which PFAS compounds were included?
- Where will future results be published?
Pitchers and fridge filters. Some pitchers and refrigerator filters are certified for PFOA and PFOS reduction and many are not. The box claim is not enough; look the model up on the certifier's listing.
Testing and next steps
Jorge's free in-home screening covers chloramine, hardness, TDS, pH and iron, not PFAS. He can walk you through Seacoast's report. See home screening vs. lab analysis. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974.
