What the plant already does
The City of Lake Worth Beach 2025 Water Quality Report describes two treatment trains. The lime softening plant treats water from 12 wells 100 to 300 feet deep. The reverse osmosis plant treats brackish water from 3 Floridan Aquifer wells about 1,500 feet deep. Both lower hardness, and the two streams are blended before chloramine is added.
The report does not print a single hardness number, so the honest answer is to measure it at your tap. Jorge does that during the free test, in grains per gallon, so you can see the number yourself.
When a softener fits in Lake Worth Beach
- Private well: untreated groundwater can be hard and carry iron. A softener is often one stage of a well system.
- Restaurants, laundries, gyms and hotels: water heaters, dishwashers, ice machines and commercial washers can benefit from softened water even when city water is moderately soft.
- A measured hardness you want lower: if the test shows hardness that causes scale you are tired of cleaning, softening is the tool for it.
How ion-exchange softening works
Resin beads trade calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium as water passes through. When the resin is loaded, the system regenerates with brine and rinses to the drain. Metered valves regenerate based on actual water use instead of a fixed schedule, which keeps salt use in check.
A softener does not remove chloramine. If taste and odor are your complaint, a filter is the right tool. See softener vs. filter in Lake Worth Beach.
Space, drains and older homes
Softeners need a drain for regeneration water and an outlet for the valve, usually near the main line. In compact older homes and duplexes, finding that spot is part of the visit. Jorge checks location before recommending anything, and if there is no workable spot, he will say so.
Sodium and drinking water
The city's report lists sodium at 53 ppm in its 2025 testing. An ion-exchange softener adds a little more sodium in proportion to the hardness it removes. Households that prefer to avoid that often use potassium chloride, or keep a separate under-sink RO for drinking water. Ask your doctor if you follow a sodium-restricted diet.
