Beach life and your shower
Days at the beach mean salt, sun and frequent rinsing, all of which affect how skin feels. Water is only one piece. If you notice a difference between your shower here and somewhere else, chloramine and water temperature are the two water-related things worth looking at.
What is in your shower water
- Chloramine: Fort Lauderdale reported a 2025 average of 2.3 ppm for the south section; Pompano Beach reported a running annual average of 3.36 ppm for the north section.
- Hardness: both utilities soften at the plant; Pompano says its water is typically 1 to 2 grains.
So for most homes here, a softener is not the answer for comfort. Reducing chloramine might be.
Options
- Whole-home filtration for chloramine treats every shower. See whole-home filtration.
- Shower filters are small; check whether the exact model lists chloramine, not just chlorine.
- Habits: shorter, cooler showers help many people.
What we do not claim
Filtration is about comfort, not treatment of any skin condition. Eczema, psoriasis and persistent itching are for a dermatologist.
What a test can and cannot show
Jorge's in-home test measures total and free chlorine, which shows the chloramine level in your shower water, plus hardness, pH and TDS. It cannot tell you why your skin feels the way it does. What it does tell you is whether there is something in the water you could reasonably change, so you can decide if a system is worth it for your comfort.
Seasonal residents
If you split the year between here and another city, you may notice a difference because utilities treat water differently. Some use free chlorine, some chloramine; some soften more than others. Both of this town's suppliers soften and chloraminate, which narrows down what to look at.
Shower filter or whole-home
A shower filter is small and treats one fixture with limited contact time. A whole-home system treats every shower and sink. If one bathroom is the issue, a certified shower filter may be enough to see whether it helps you. If everyone in the house notices it, a whole-home system is the more complete step.
