Reported fluoride levels
| South (Fort Lauderdale) | North (Pompano Beach) | |
|---|---|---|
| Fluoride added? | No, discontinued before July 2025 | No, not since July 1, 2025 |
| Level in report | 0.699 ppm highest (range 0.612 to 0.699), sampled April 2023 | 0.59 ppm, sampled February 2025 |
Note the sample dates: Fort Lauderdale's figure predates the change. Pompano Beach says naturally occurring fluoride may still be present.
How to reduce fluoride at home
- Reverse osmosis is a common method for drinking water. See under-sink RO.
- Ordinary carbon filters generally do not target fluoride.
- Check that the exact model's certification lists fluoride reduction.
RO produces water more slowly than a regular faucet and sends some water to drain while it works. Consider how much drinking and cooking water your household uses before choosing a model.
A neutral note
This page does not take a position on fluoride. Questions about fluoride and dental health are for your dentist or doctor. The decision to filter is yours; Jorge just explains the options.
Alkaline RO and minerals
RO reduces most dissolved minerals. Living Water's alkaline RO adds some minerals back for taste after the membrane. Compare alkaline and standard RO.
If you have small children or specific health questions, your pediatrician or dentist can tell you what makes sense for your family.
Why the law changed
Florida's SB 700, effective July 1, 2025, prevents public water systems from adding fluoride for dental benefits. Pompano Beach's water page explains this in its FAQ, and Fort Lauderdale's 2025 report says the city stopped before that date in compliance with Florida law. What remains is the fluoride that occurs naturally in Biscayne Aquifer groundwater.
Questions to ask before buying for fluoride
- Is this exact model certified for fluoride reduction, and to what standard?
- How much water does it produce per day, and is that enough for drinking and cooking?
- How often do the stages that reduce fluoride need replacing?
- Do you want minerals added back after RO for taste?
