Why many homes here spend nothing on softening
South of Pine Avenue, Fort Lauderdale water comes from a lime-softening plant or a nanofiltration plant. North of it, Pompano Beach water is membrane- and lime-softened. Water that is already soft rarely needs a second softener. A hardness reading at your tap settles it.
Pompano Beach's water page puts its typical hardness at 1 to 2 grains. Ask anyone quoting a softener to compare that with the number they measured at your tap.
When you do need one: price drivers
- Hardness and iron measured in your water.
- Daily water use, by household size or business volume.
- Valve type: metered regeneration uses salt and water by actual use.
- Installation: drain, power, bypass and placement protected from salt air.
- Other stages on a well, such as iron or sulfur treatment.
Hotels and restaurants
Commercial softening is sized to daily volume and the equipment it protects: water heaters, dishwashers, ice machines, washers. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for businesses, and a good quote lists capacity, regeneration settings and expected salt use.
Ongoing costs
- Salt or potassium each month.
- Regeneration water.
- Resin life and service.
Questions to ask any quote
- What hardness did you measure at my tap?
- Why this capacity?
- How much salt will it use?
- Would a filter fix my actual complaint instead?
Placement near the ocean
A softener needs a drain, power and a spot near the main line. Outdoors near the coast, equipment faces salt air and sun, so a covered or enclosed location helps it last. Salt storage also needs a dry place. These details add to installation time, and a good quote says how they will be handled.
