Softening already happens at the plant
| Your side of town | Utility | Softening at the plant |
|---|---|---|
| South | City of Fort Lauderdale | Fiveash lime-softening plant or Peele-Dixie nanofiltration plant |
| North | City of Pompano Beach | Membrane and lime softening; hardness typically 1 to 2 grains |
Water at that level is generally considered soft. Spots on glass can still appear, because no tap water is mineral-free, but that alone rarely justifies a softener. See hard water spots.
When a softener is worth it
- Private wells: untreated groundwater can be hard and carry iron. See well water treatment.
- Hotels, restaurants and laundries: heavy hot-water use and equipment such as dishwashers, ice machines and boilers benefit from scale protection.
- Measured hardness at your tap that is higher than expected, which Jorge will show you.
Businesses along the beach
Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for businesses: hotels, restaurants, schools, laundries, car washes, offices and gyms. Even on softened city water, some commercial equipment makers set their own limits for incoming water. Jorge measures what you have, compares it with what the equipment needs and sizes the plant to daily volume.
Softener or filter
If your complaint is a chemical taste or smell, a softener will not help; that is chloramine, and the fix is a filter rated for it. See softener vs. filter and the salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener comparison.
Signs that point away from a softener
- The complaint is taste or a pool-like smell: that is chloramine, and a softener does not touch it.
- Spots appear only on glass and dark fixtures: often drying habits, not hardness.
- A rotten-egg smell from the hot tap: usually the water heater. See sulfur smell.
If one of these is your main concern, a softener would add salt and upkeep without solving it. Jorge will say so during the visit.
Who to call about hardness questions
For the utility's own data, Pompano Beach's laboratory answers water quality questions at 954-545-7018, and Fort Lauderdale's Customer Service Center is 954-828-8000. Their annual reports list what they test for each year. Jorge's in-home reading then shows the number at your faucet.
Check business equipment manuals
For a business, the equipment manual is a good starting point: many ice machines, boilers and dishwashers list maximum hardness for incoming water. Bring those numbers to the test.
A hardness reading takes minutes. Call, text or WhatsApp Jorge at (305) 793-5974 for a free in-home test.
