What people want from RO here
District 1 water meets drinking water standards. The reasons people add RO are taste, especially the chloramine taste, and specific items from the county report they would like lower: fluoride (0.845 ppm in the 2025 report), sodium (35 ppm), and PFAS compounds such as PFOA and PFOS, which the report lists at 0.0078 and 0.02 µg/L. RO is a common technology for each of these. The exact model's certification tells you what it actually reduces.
Check the listing
- NSF/ANSI 58 is the RO standard. Look for the specific claims you care about on the model's listing.
- NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 may cover the carbon stages, including chloramine.
- Chloramine is hard on membranes if the carbon prefilter is not suited to it, so the prefilter matters on county water.
Living Water's system
The system is multi-stage: sediment and carbon prefilters, an RO membrane, and a post stage that adds minerals back for a smoother taste and higher pH. It runs to a dedicated faucet. See the compact alkaline RO page and alkaline vs. standard RO.
RO compared with other options
A pitcher or fridge filter is the low-cost start, but many are certified only for chlorine taste and odor, which is not the same as chloramine, and their small cartridges need frequent changes. A whole-home filter takes care of chloramine everywhere but is not designed to lower dissolved minerals or fluoride. RO is the step that does the most for the glass you drink. Condos and apartments
Lauderdale Lakes has many condo communities and apartment buildings where you cannot touch the main. Under-sink RO connects to one cold line and the sink drain, so it usually fits within association rules. Check with your association or landlord first, especially if a countertop hole is needed for the faucet.
Maintenance
- Prefilters on a schedule, sooner if chloramine is high.
- The membrane on a longer interval.
- The alkaline cartridge on its own schedule.
- Some water goes to drain while the system makes purified water.
