The options side by side
| Option | Good at | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Pitcher | Taste, low start-up cost | Small capacity, frequent cartridges, limited claims |
| Fridge filter | Convenience | Many are certified for chlorine taste only |
| Under-sink alkaline RO | Broadest reduction claims, dedicated faucet | Cabinet space, filter schedule, some water to drain |
| Whole-home filter | Disinfectant taste and odor at every tap | Not a drinking water system by itself |
Match it to Lauderhill's report
The City's 2025 report gives you the starting list:
- Disinfectant: 2.6 ppm average. Carbon stages handle taste and odor; check the chloramine claim if your test shows it.
- Color: an aesthetic reading above the secondary standard, from natural organics. Carbon and RO both address appearance.
- Fluoride: 0.61 to 0.67 ppm in early 2025. RO is the common method if you want less.
- PFAS: not detected to 35 ng/L. Look for NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 PFOA/PFOS claims.
- Lead: no lead service lines in the City's inventory, but home plumbing varies. Look for a lead claim.
Why many choose under-sink RO
RO pushes water through a membrane that holds back most dissolved solids, with carbon stages before and after. Living Water's system adds an alkaline remineralizing stage for taste. It runs to a separate faucet, so cooking water, coffee and ice come from one place. See under-sink RO in Lauderhill and carbon vs. reverse osmosis.
Condo or house
In a condo, under-sink RO is usually the whole answer. In a house, many families pair a whole-home filter for showers and laundry with RO at the kitchen for drinking water.
The rule for any product
Whatever you choose, read the exact model's certification listing. If a claim matters to you, such as lead, fluoride or PFOA and PFOS, it should be on that listing, not just in an ad. Change filters on schedule, because an expired cartridge does not perform as listed.
Questions to ask before you buy
- What exactly is this model certified to reduce, and under which NSF/ANSI standard?
- How often are the cartridges changed, and who changes them?
- Does it need a separate faucet or a refrigerator line?
- What happens to the warranty if I move?
