Why RO for the kitchen
Lauderhill's water is lime softened and disinfected at the City plant and meets drinking water standards. People choose RO for taste, for fewer dissolved minerals in coffee and ice, and for specific concerns. The 2025 report lists several items residents ask about: fluoride (0.61 to 0.67 ppm in early 2025 samples), sodium (20.4 ppm), and PFAS results from not detected to 35 ng/L. RO is a common method for all three, but only the exact model's certification tells you what it reduces.
Certifications to look for
- NSF/ANSI 58: the reverse osmosis standard. Check which specific claims (for example fluoride, lead, PFOA and PFOS) are on the exact model's listing.
- NSF/ANSI 42 and 53: often apply to the carbon stages, for taste, odor, chlorine or chloramine.
A brand name is not a certification. The listing for the specific model is what counts, and you can look it up on the certifier's public database before you buy. Ask for the model number in writing.
How the alkaline system works
Living Water's under-sink system is multi-stage: sediment and carbon prefilters, the RO membrane, and a final stage that adds minerals back to raise pH and soften the taste. It feeds its own faucet at the sink. See the compact alkaline RO page and alkaline vs. standard RO.
RO vs. bottled water and pitchers
Many Lauderhill households buy bottled water or use a pitcher. Both work, but bottles are a recurring purchase you carry home, and many pitcher filters are certified only for chlorine taste and odor, not for the items people ask about most. An under-sink RO system makes purified water on demand at a dedicated faucet, and its certifications are model-specific, so you can check exactly what it reduces. Condos, rentals and offices
Much of Lauderhill's housing is condos and apartments where you cannot touch the main line. Under-sink RO works there because it connects at one cold water line and one drain under the sink. If you rent, ask the owner first. Offices and gyms use the same system for a break-room tap.
Upkeep
- Prefilters are changed on a schedule based on use.
- The membrane lasts longer than the prefilters.
- RO sends some water to the drain while it makes purified water.
Ask for the replacement schedule in writing. See RO maintenance and operating costs.
