Softening happens before the water arrives
Biscayne Aquifer groundwater is naturally hard. Pompano Beach removes much of that hardness at treatment, then sends the water through its distribution system to Lighthouse Point. By the time it reaches your meter, the job a home softener would do has largely been done. That's a different situation from homes on untreated well water, where hardness is often the main issue.
It also explains why spots and scale in Lighthouse Point homes are often milder than people expect when they arrive from other parts of the country, or even from other South Florida cities whose utilities soften less.
When a softener makes sense here
- Private well for household water: unsoftened aquifer water can be hard; see well water in Lighthouse Point.
- Restaurants, marinas, offices and gyms: some equipment needs very low hardness. Living Water offers ion-exchange softening plants for businesses.
- A test result that surprises: find the cause before buying.
For businesses, Jorge asks for the equipment maker's water requirements first. A commercial dishwasher, ice machine or boiler may specify a hardness target well below what's in the city water, and a softening plant sized to that target, and to the daily volume, uses salt and water more efficiently than one chosen by guesswork.
The chloramine question
What Lighthouse Point residents usually notice is chloramine, not hardness. A softener doesn't remove chloramine. If taste and smell are the concern, the answer is a filter. See chloramine filters and softener vs. filter.
Salt and sodium
Pompano Beach's 2025 report lists sodium at 24.9 ppm. An ion-exchange softener adds sodium in proportion to the hardness it removes, so the amount depends on your water. Potassium chloride is an alternative regenerant. Questions about sodium and health go to your doctor.
If you're on a well with hard water, the sodium question becomes more relevant, because a softener removes more hardness and adds proportionally more sodium. An RO tap for drinking water is one common way households handle it.
Salt-free conditioners
Salt-free conditioners don't remove hardness minerals; they change how they behave. On already-soft water, the benefit is limited. Compare in salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
Ask for a number
Any softener recommendation should start with a measured hardness at your tap. Jorge gives you that number and tells you plainly if you don't need a softener. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974. Cost factors: softener cost in Lighthouse Point.
