Where the spots come from
| Spot location | Usual cause |
|---|---|
| Shower glass, faucets | Dissolved solids left as tap water dries |
| Windows, screen enclosures, cars | Sprinkler overspray or salt spray |
| Boat after a freshwater rinse | Whatever is dissolved in the rinse water |
| Kettle, coffee maker | Minerals concentrating as water boils |
If your home uses a private well for household water, spots and scale can be much heavier, because untreated aquifer water still carries the hardness that Pompano Beach removes at its plants.
Soft isn't the same as pure
Softening removes calcium and magnesium; it doesn't remove all dissolved solids. So even softened water can spot glass as it evaporates. If spot-free drinking water and glassware matter, under-sink RO lowers TDS. See under-sink RO.
Rinsing boats and cars
On a waterfront property, freshwater rinses after a day on the water are routine. Spotting on gelcoat and glass comes from whatever is dissolved in the rinse water. A chamois or blower after rinsing helps; low-TDS water helps more. Equipment choices depend on the water you use and how much.
Softener vs. conditioner
A softener removes hardness; a salt-free conditioner leaves minerals in the water and changes how they behave. On softened city water, neither may be necessary. On a hard private well, a softener is the usual answer. See salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
Prevention
- Squeegee shower glass after use.
- Aim sprinklers away from windows and screens.
- Descale kettles and coffee makers on schedule.
- Use a vinegar-based cleaner on fixtures, testing a hidden spot first.
- Dry boats and cars after rinsing rather than letting them air-dry in the sun.
Test before buying
Jorge measures hardness and TDS at your tap, and can test outdoor water if the spots are outside. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974. Related: water softeners in Lighthouse Point.
For businesses such as restaurants and marinas, spotting and scale limits are set by the equipment maker. Even on softened water, some equipment calls for lower hardness or TDS; Living Water's ion-exchange softening plants are sized after a test and a look at those specs.
