Margate's numbers
The 2025 Water Quality Report lists the disinfectant residual at a 3.0 ppm average, with results ranging from 0.7 to 4.0 ppm, against a maximum residual disinfectant level of 4.0. The city's chlorination notice confirms chloramine is the standard method and that the system returns to it after the summer free-chlorine period.
Chloramine is formed by adding ammonia to chlorine. It lasts longer in the pipe network, which helps keep water protected across a large distribution system like Margate's, which the city says has more than 200 miles of water mains.
Chlorine vs. chloramine, in plain terms
| Free chlorine | Chloramine | |
|---|---|---|
| Used in Margate | About three weeks each summer | The rest of the year |
| Smell | Stronger, pool-like | Milder, but persistent |
| Carbon filters | Removed quickly | Needs more contact time or catalytic carbon |
What to look for in a filter
- A listing under NSF/ANSI 42 that names chloramine reduction, not just chlorine.
- The exact model number on the certifier's listing.
- Flow rate and capacity that match your home; claims only hold within them.
Catalytic carbon is a common media choice for chloramine because it is treated to react faster. Whatever the media, ask how the system was sized for your flow and how often the media is serviced.
Options for Margate homes
- Whole-home: a city water system at the main line. Living Water describes its Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring systems as removing chloramine and chlorine.
- Kitchen: an under-sink RO with chloramine-rated carbon pre-filters.
- Both: common in single-family homes.

Many households start with an under-sink RO and add a whole-home system later if the shower smell still bothers them; a good plan allows for that.
Fish tanks, dialysis and pets
Margate's chlorination notice advises dialysis patients who use a proportioning machine to talk to their physician about the change in disinfection, and aquarium owners to contact a professional aquarist. Chloramine also needs to be neutralized for fish year-round. A household filter is not a substitute for medical-grade water treatment.
Measure, then decide
Jorge measures total chlorine at your tap before recommending anything, and again after installation so you see the difference. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974.
He also asks when the smell bothers you most. If it peaks in late July and August, that lines up with Margate's free-chlorine weeks, and a filter that handles chloramine handles that period too. If it is constant all year, that is the normal chloramine residual.
