Why the city water is not usually the culprit
Margate's Utilities Division page describes the first treatment step as aeration "to remove iron and carbon dioxide," followed by lime softening and filtration. Irrigation water pumped straight from the ground skips all of that. When it sprays on stucco, concrete or pavers, dissolved iron oxidizes in air and sun and leaves orange streaks.
Iron stains tend to be worst where the same wall or walkway gets hit every watering cycle. Over months, light orange becomes deep rust that is hard to remove without damaging the surface.
Indoor stains
- Private well: iron stains sinks, toilets and laundry.
- Iron bacteria: Florida's Department of Health lists red stains, swampy or oily smells, and red slimy growth in the toilet tank as signs.
- Hydrant flushing: Margate flushes hydrants during its annual free-chlorine period; the city says cloudy or discolored water is temporary and clears within a few hours.
- Aging pipes: rust from galvanized pipe inside the home is a plumbing issue.
What to test
Jorge tests iron at the faucet or sprinkler that stains, plus pH and hardness, which affect how iron behaves and which treatment works. If the indoor water is clean and the sprinkler water is high in iron, you know exactly where to focus.
Iron bacteria and plain dissolved iron need different approaches, so the test includes a look at the water and any slime or deposits around the well head or toilet tank.
Options for irrigation stains
- Iron treatment on the irrigation line, sized for the pump flow.
- Adjusting sprinkler heads so they do not hit walls and walkways.
- For HOA common areas, asking the association about its irrigation source.
Clean existing stains with products approved for your surface; some cleaners etch pavers or damage paint.
Options for a drinking well
A well water system configured from the well's test, which may include oxidation and filtration for iron and a softener for hardness. See well water in Margate.
The order matters: iron is usually removed before a softener so the softener resin is not fouled, and the whole system is sized for your household's flow.
