What gets measured
| Test | Margate context |
|---|---|
| Total chlorine (chloramine) | The 2025 report lists 3.0 ppm average, range 0.7 to 4.0. |
| Hardness | The plant lime-softens; the report gives no hardness number, so your tap reading is the useful one. |
| TDS | Dissolved minerals; sodium alone was 45.6 ppm in the report. |
| pH | Context for taste and for alkaline RO. |
| Iron | Mainly for wells and irrigation water; the plant aerates to remove iron. |
Each number gets explained in context: what it means, how it compares with Margate's report, and whether it points to any equipment at all. Many visits end with "your water is fine for what you care about," and that is a perfectly good outcome.
Timing matters in Margate
If you test during Margate's annual free-chlorine period (July 28 to August 20 in 2026), your reading reflects free chlorine, not the normal chloramine. Hydrant flushing during that time can also cause brief discoloration. For a picture of your everyday water, test outside that window, or Jorge will note it in your results.
When to use a certified lab
- Lead: Margate's report says if you are concerned about lead and want your water tested, email [email protected] or call (954) 972-0828.
- PFAS: requires certified lab methods.
- Bacteria in a private well: Florida's Department of Health recommends regular testing.
See home screening vs. lab analysis.
Jorge can also help you decide whether a lab test is worth it based on your home's age, your plumbing and what you are worried about, so you do not spend money on tests you do not need.
What the visit looks like
- You tell Jorge what you notice.
- He tests at the kitchen tap, and at the shower, well or outdoor tap if relevant.
- He explains each number and what it means for you.
- He recommends only what fits, or nothing.
