Why spots happen on softened water
A water spot is the residue left when a droplet dries. Hardness minerals are part of it, but sodium and other dissolved solids leave residue too, and those are not removed by softening. On dark glass, chrome or a car in the sun, even moderate TDS can show.
Margate's report lists sodium at 45.6 ppm, a little higher than some neighboring systems, so faint spotting on glass after softening is not unusual and is not a sign your softener or the plant is failing.
Where scale really builds up
- Irrigation wells: untreated, harder water leaves white crust on glass, pavers and plants, and often orange iron stains too.
- Private drinking wells: no lime softening, so hardness is typically higher.
- Hot water equipment: water heaters, dishwashers and ice machines concentrate minerals over time, which matters most in restaurants and laundries.
If the white crust lines up with sprinkler spray on your windows or pool enclosure, test the irrigation water before buying anything for the house.

A third option is no equipment at all: if the spots are cosmetic and only on shower glass, a squeegee and a water-repellent glass treatment may be enough. Jorge will tell you if that is the case.
Cheap fixes that work
- Squeegee glass shower doors.
- Use dishwasher rinse aid.
- Soak aerators and shower heads periodically.
- Rinse cars with filtered water or dry them in shade.
For cars and dark-tinted windows, washing in shade and drying right away removes most spotting regardless of the water.
Businesses
