Softening that happens before your meter
Margate's 2025 Water Quality Report describes lime softening as a core step: Biscayne Aquifer water goes through two 13.5 million gallon per day clarifiers where lime reduces hardness and a polymer helps particles settle, followed by multi-media filtration. The report does not publish a hardness figure, so the honest way to know your number is to measure it at your tap.
Lime softening works by raising the pH so dissolved calcium and magnesium settle out as solids. It reduces hardness rather than eliminating it, which is normal for municipal treatment and why a little scale can still appear on hot water fixtures over time.
When a softener earns its place
- Private drinking well: raw Biscayne Aquifer water has not been softened. See well water in Margate.
- Commercial kitchens and laundries: hot water equipment concentrates minerals and scales up even on moderately hard water.
- Gyms, offices and schools: water heaters, ice machines and coffee equipment benefit from consistent hardness.
- Your tap simply tests hard: it happens, and the number decides.
Ion-exchange softening plants
Living Water offers ion-exchange water softening plants for homes and businesses: hotels, restaurants, schools, laundries, car washes, offices and gyms. Ion exchange swaps hardness minerals for sodium or potassium and regenerates on a schedule. A plant sized from your measured hardness and daily use runs efficiently; one sized from a guess wastes salt and water or runs out early.
For a business, the cost of scale shows up as service calls, slower ice production and shorter equipment life. Matching the softening plant to the manufacturer's water requirements is usually the target.
Sodium in Margate water
The report lists sodium at 45.6 ppm (July 2023). An ion-exchange softener adds a small additional amount in proportion to the hardness it removes. If that matters to you, many people pair a softener with an under-sink RO for drinking and cooking water.
Softener or filter?
If what bothers you is a chlorine-like smell, a softener will not touch it; that is chloramine. See chloramine filters and the softener vs. filter page. If it is white spots on glass, read hard water spots in Margate first, since spotting can come from dissolved solids too.
