Start with the plant
Margate's 2025 Water Quality Report describes lime softening in two clarifiers rated at 13.5 million gallons per day each. The report does not list a hardness figure, so testing your tap is the reliable way to decide. Many homes find chloramine, not hardness, is what they actually notice.
If you are in Coconut Creek south of Coconut Creek Parkway, you are likely on Margate water too, and the same advice applies.
What moves softener cost
- Hardness: sets capacity and regeneration frequency.
- Volume: household size, or daily commercial use.
- Valve and tank size: matched to peak flow.
- Installation: location, drain, electrical, bypass.
- Pre-treatment on wells: iron or sulfur may need treating first.
An oversized softener wastes money up front; an undersized one regenerates constantly and uses more salt and water. Sizing from real numbers is the cheapest choice over time.
Commercial softening in Margate
Restaurants, laundries, car washes, gyms and offices along State Road 7, Atlantic Boulevard and Margate Boulevard often soften to protect equipment. A good quote is built from measured hardness and daily volume, and plans for brine tank access and service without shutting down operations.
Car washes and laundries also use a lot of water for rinsing, and spotting on finished cars or linens is often the visible reason they soften in the first place.
Ongoing costs to ask about
- Salt or potassium use per week.
- Water used for regeneration.
- Resin life and service.
- Warranty coverage and length.

Ask about the regeneration setting as well: demand-initiated regeneration, based on how much water you actually use, generally uses less salt than a fixed timer.
Sodium considerations
Margate's report lists sodium at 45.6 ppm. Ion-exchange softening adds some sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which is why many pair a softener with RO for drinking water. That pairing affects total cost, so ask for both on one quote if it applies.
Ask whether the quote includes a separate drinking water tap, or whether the softened water will feed the kitchen faucet directly. Either can be fine; you should know which you are paying for.
Questions for any seller
- What hardness did you measure, and where?
- How did you size the unit?
- What will it use in salt and water?
- What is not included?
