Why chloramine on Miami Beach
Water reaching Miami Beach comes primarily from WASD's Hialeah and John E. Preston plants and travels a long way: through WASD's transmission lines, across Biscayne Bay, then through the city's own mains, building risers and sometimes building tanks. A disinfectant that stays active over that distance matters. The city's 2024 Water Quality Report shows the chloramine process (ammonia added to combine with chlorine) and reports disinfectant results for the city's own distribution system.
The periodic switch to free chlorine
From time to time WASD temporarily changes from chloramine to free chlorine for about two weeks. The City of Miami Beach has posted notices explaining that residents may notice a chlorine taste or smell during the switch, which is a normal part of maintenance. If you keep fish, check with an aquarium professional; both chlorine and chloramine matter for aquariums.
What to look for in a filter
- Chloramine by name in the product documentation, not just chlorine
- Certification: NSF/ANSI 42 includes chloramine reduction; confirm the exact model is listed
- Contact time: enough media for your flow so performance holds when several taps run
- Replacement schedule in writing
Living Water describes its Puronics whole-home systems as removing chlorine and chloramine. More detail in choosing a filter for chloramine.
Condo vs. house
| Condo or apartment | Single-family house | |
|---|---|---|
| Usual option | Under-sink RO with carbon stages | Whole-home filter, often plus RO |
| Covers showers? | No (a shower filter can help partially) | Yes |
| Approval | Association or landlord | Owner decision |
Why basic carbon can fall short
Activated carbon removes free chlorine quickly, but chloramine reacts more slowly. A small cartridge with short contact time may reduce chlorine well and chloramine only partly. That is why pitcher and shower filters vary so much on chloramine, and why sizing matters for whole-home systems.
Where you notice chloramine most
Many Miami Beach residents notice it first in a hot shower, where warm water releases more odor, or in coffee and tea, where it can flatten flavor. Ice from an unfiltered refrigerator line can carry the taste too. Knowing where it bothers you decides the equipment: kitchen-only concerns point to RO, while shower comfort points to whole-home treatment in a house or a shower filter in a condo. See dry skin after showering for the comfort side.
