Is whole-home right for your Miami Beach home?
- Single-family house on the islands, in North Beach or along the bay: usually yes, if you want filtered water at every tap.
- Townhome or small building you own outright: often yes, if the main line is accessible.
- Condo or apartment: usually not, because the main line is shared. Look at under-sink RO instead, or ask your association.
What the system is filtering
Miami Beach water starts at WASD's Hialeah and John E. Preston plants, according to the city's 2024 Water Quality Report. WASD disinfects it with chloramine, and the City of Miami Beach delivers it through its own distribution system with its own sampling program. The water meets standards. Whole-home filtration is about comfort: less pool smell in hot showers, better-tasting tap water everywhere, and no separate pitchers in every room.
Because chloramine is more stable than chlorine, the filter needs enough contact time with the right media. Living Water describes its Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring whole-home systems as removing chlorine and chloramine. See choosing a filter for chloramine.
Installation on a barrier island
- Location. Many homes have the main line near the front or side yard; equipment is often placed in a garage, utility closet or a protected exterior spot.
- Salt air. Ocean air is hard on exposed metal. Ask how the equipment and fittings are protected if any part is outdoors.
- Flood planning. Parts of Miami Beach see tidal and rain flooding. Placing electrical components above likely water levels is worth discussing.
- Your service line. The city says customers own the line from the meter to the home. Its Water Service Line Inventory Map shows recorded service line materials.
Pair it with drinking water
Many homeowners add an under-sink alkaline RO at the kitchen sink for drinking and cooking. The whole-home unit handles chloramine for bathing and appliances; RO gives a dedicated drinking tap. Compare whole-house filtration vs. RO.
Hardness is a separate decision
The plants serving Miami Beach use lime treatment and, at Preston, enhanced softening, so some hardness is removed before the water reaches you. If your test still shows spots and scale, a softener may be added. If not, skip it. See softener vs. filter on Miami Beach.
