The timeline
- May 6, 2025: Miami-Dade County Resolution No. R-370-25 approved.
- May 15, 2025: Florida Senate Bill 700 approved by the Governor, effective July 1, 2025.
- June 6, 2025: WASD's three regional plants stopped adding fluoride.
- After: main-system fluoride 0.1 to 0.3 ppm, from naturally occurring levels in the soil and Biscayne Aquifer.
WASD says the change does not significantly affect treatment processes or compliance.
Home options
| Method | Fluoride? |
|---|---|
| Reverse osmosis | Common method; check for an NSF/ANSI 58 fluoride listing |
| Activated alumina | Used in some specialty filters |
| Carbon (pitcher, fridge, whole-home) | Not designed for fluoride |
Because fluoride is no longer added, many households that used to buy RO specifically for fluoride now find their main reasons are taste, chloramine and dissolved solids. That is fine; RO still addresses those. Just be clear about which claims you are paying for, and check each on the listing.
Certification
A fluoride claim must be on the exact model's listing, and it holds only with timely membrane and filter changes. Ask any seller to show it. Jorge will show you the listing for any system he recommends, or say plainly if a model lacks the claim.
Keep a simple log of filter and membrane changes, and ask for a dissolved-solids check at service visits so you can see the system still performs.
Also check what the listing says about the conditions of the test, such as inlet pressure and the fluoride level used. Real-world performance depends on your pressure and on keeping pre-filters fresh, so a home with low pressure may need a booster to get the listed result.
Health decisions
We do not make health claims for or against fluoride. Questions about fluoride for children or about dental care belong with your dentist or pediatrician, especially now that fluoride is no longer added to WASD water.
The WASD report is the place to confirm current fluoride levels each year. If the policy changes again, the report will show it.
Did the change affect water treatment? WASD says it does not significantly affect treatment processes or compliance with water quality standards.
