Stage by stage
| Stage | Job |
|---|---|
| Sediment | Catches particles |
| Carbon (catalytic where needed) | Reduces chloramine, which WASD reports at a 2.5 ppm average, to protect the membrane |
| RO membrane | Lowers dissolved solids such as salts and minerals |
| Post-filter and alkaline | Polishes taste and remineralizes |
Because chloramine is slower to break down than free chlorine, the pre-filter in a Miami Shores system does real work. A good design gives it enough carbon and enough contact time, and the schedule replaces it before chloramine can reach and wear the membrane.
Why Miami Shores households choose RO
- A dedicated tap that ends the bottled-water run.
- Better-tasting coffee, tea and ice.
- Peace of mind in older homes: WASD's lead service line inventory and your home's own plumbing are separate questions, and for lead claims you should only trust a model certified under NSF/ANSI 58 for lead reduction.
- Works in rentals and condos with landlord or association approval.
Installation in older kitchens
Older Miami Shores kitchens sometimes have shallow cabinets, cast-iron drains or stone countertops. Jorge checks:
- Cabinet depth and whether a compact unit fits better than a tank.
- Where to mount the faucet, and whether the countertop needs drilling.
- The drain connection point.
- An optional line to the fridge or ice maker.

Jorge also checks water pressure. RO membranes need adequate pressure to produce water efficiently; low pressure means slower production and more water to the drain, and in some homes a small booster pump is the fix.
Certification is model-specific
NSF/ANSI 58 covers RO systems. Every reduction claim, whether lead, arsenic, fluoride, PFAS or dissolved solids, applies to the exact listed model with filters changed on schedule. Ask to see the listing for anything you consider, including ours. Read alkaline vs. standard RO.
Keeping it working
Pre-filters protect the membrane from chloramine and particles, so their schedule matters most. Jorge gives you the intervals and part list up front. Cost factors are on RO cost in Miami Shores.
A dissolved-solids reading at each service visit is a simple way to confirm the membrane still performs. If the number from the RO faucet creeps up toward the tap reading, it is time for a change.
