What PFAS are
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances have been used in nonstick, stain-resistant and water-resistant products and some firefighting foams. They break down very slowly. EPA's PFAS pages explain the federal rule and its compliance schedule.
Where to see Miami Shores' data
WASD's 2025 report includes an "Additional Contaminants Monitoring" table for PFOS, PFOA, PFNA, PFHxS and a Hazard Index for certain PFAS mixtures, reported for the main system that serves Miami Shores. WASD states that initial compliance monitoring is underway and that its systems are taking measures to comply on the rule's schedule. Read the table on miamidade.gov, with its footnotes, rather than relying on summaries. EPA also publishes UCMR 5 results by water system.
The federal PFAS rule sets limits for PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, PFHxS and HFPO-DA, plus a Hazard Index for mixtures, and gives utilities time to complete initial monitoring and come into compliance. Check EPA's PFAS drinking water pages for the current schedule, since dates in federal rules can change.
How to read the table
- Values are in parts per trillion (ppt).
- The number before the parentheses is the reported level; the range follows in parentheses.
- Compliance with the federal limits is based on running averages under the rule's timeline, not a single sample.
- Footnotes explain which samples and years apply.
Living Water does not turn these numbers into a safety verdict, and no salesperson should.
Choosing a filter
- NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (RO) certification naming PFOA and PFOS reduction.
- The exact model number on the certifier's listing.
- On-time cartridge and membrane changes; claims hold only within rated capacity.
Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. Jorge will tell you to verify the certification of any model, including anything he shows you.
Testing your own water
PFAS testing needs a certified lab using EPA methods. Jorge's free screening covers chloramine, hardness, TDS, pH and iron, not PFAS. He can help you read the WASD table. See home screening vs. lab analysis.

If PFAS is your main concern, it is reasonable to ask WASD how its plans affect the plants serving north of SW 8 Street; the report lists 786-552-4738 for water quality questions about the Hialeah and Preston plants.
