Why chloramine changes the design
WASD's 2025 report explains that chlorine is added first and ammonia is then added to form chloramine, which lasts longer in the pipes. It reported a main-system running annual average of 2.5 ppm. That stability is good for distribution, but it makes chloramine slower to reduce than free chlorine. A whole-home unit for Miami Shores should be sized so water spends enough time in the media at your peak flow.
Living Water's Puronics whole-home systems, the Clarius iGen and Goodspring, are described by Living Water as removing chloramine and chlorine.
Older homes, older plumbing
Many Miami Shores homes date back decades. Before installing anything on the main line, Jorge looks at:
- Where the service line enters and whether there is room for the system and a bypass.
- Pipe material and size, because mixed old and new piping is common after renovations.
- Water pressure, so the system does not reduce it noticeably.
- Where a backwash or rinse line would drain, especially on homes still on septic.
WASD's lead service line inventory at miamidade.gov/knowyourpipes lets you look up your address's service line material.
Sizing for your household
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| How many bathrooms run at once? | Sets the peak flow the media must handle |
| How many people live there? | Sets daily gallons and media life |
| Is there a pool or guest house on the same line? | Some lines may be better left unfiltered |
| Do you want softening too? | Hardness at your tap decides |
What it will and will not do
A whole-home carbon system reduces chloramine taste and odor at every tap. It does not lower dissolved solids or remove hardness. WASD lime-softens at its plants, so many homes find softening unnecessary, but your tap reading decides. For drinking water, many families add an under-sink alkaline RO.
Disinfection byproducts
WASD's 2025 report lists TTHM at 50 ppb and HAA5 at 34 ppb for the main system, below limits of 80 and 60. If reducing them is your goal, look for a model whose certification lists that reduction specifically.

Living Water offers financing through its financing partners; you apply with a credit application, and a co-applicant can apply with you. See also whole-house filtration vs. RO.
If you are renovating, it is the easiest time to add a whole-home system: the main line is exposed, and the equipment location and drain can be planned into the work rather than retrofitted.
