Factors worth checking
- Chloramine: 2.5 ppm running annual average in WASD's 2025 report. Its smell is strongest in a hot, steamy shower.
- Hardness: the Hialeah and Preston plants soften the water, but some minerals remain and can leave soap residue on skin and hair.
- The water heater: sediment and scale in an older tank can change how hot water smells and feels, and Miami Springs has plenty of older homes.
- Habits: long, hot showers dry skin whatever the water.
Air conditioning running much of the year also dries indoor air, which some people notice on their skin regardless of water.
What testing shows
Jorge measures total chlorine and hardness at a shower or bathroom tap, compares hot and cold, and looks at the heater. If chloramine is the main factor, filtration is the tool. If hardness is notable, softening may help. If both are low, he'll tell you the water probably isn't the cause. You keep the written results.
He also notes how long showers run and how hot, since habits matter as much as chemistry.
Shower filter or whole-home
Shower-head filters are small and water passes through them quickly, which limits contact time for chloramine. A whole-home system treats every shower and tap with larger media. Living Water describes its Puronics whole-home systems as removing chloramine and chlorine. Where testing shows hardness, a softener can be added.
In older houses, Jorge checks where the main line enters and whether there's room for the system.
See a dermatologist for skin conditions
Eczema, rashes and persistent itching need a medical opinion. Water treatment can make showers more comfortable but is not a treatment for any skin condition. If you're seeing a dermatologist, your test results can help that conversation.
The two weeks it smells stronger
During WASD's annual free-chlorine conversion (September 28 to October 11 in 2026), many people notice a stronger smell in the shower. If your skin feels the same then as the rest of the year, the disinfectant may not be your main factor.
Habits that help
- Warm, shorter showers.
- Moisturize right after drying.
- Run the bathroom fan.
- Descale shower heads so flow stays even.
