Softening happens before the water arrives
WASD's 2025 report says Hialeah plant water is treated much like the Orr plant's lime treatment to reduce hardness, and that Preston water goes through enhanced softening because of its natural organic content. Neither process removes every mineral, and the report doesn't give a hardness figure per city. Your tap test is the number that counts.
Who in Miami Springs tends to need one
- Homes on a private well, which get no plant softening.
- Hotels, restaurants and laundries where dishwashers, ice machines, boilers and washers are sensitive to scale.
- Offices and gyms with heavy hot-water use.
- Homes whose test shows notable hardness with visible scale.
Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for homes and businesses, sized to measured hardness and water use.
The 2020 census counted 5,361 housing units in the city, mostly homes on county water, which is why most softener questions here end with a test rather than a purchase.
How ion exchange works
Resin beads swap hardness minerals for sodium. When the resin fills up, the unit regenerates with salt brine and flushes it to a drain. Modern controls can regenerate based on actual water use instead of a fixed calendar, which saves salt in homes where people travel.
What a softener doesn't do
It doesn't remove chloramine, improve taste or treat irrigation stains. For the chloramine smell, see whole-home filtration. For orange stains from sprinklers, see iron stains. The softener vs. filter page explains the difference.
Many Miami Springs homes on county water get more from filtration and a kitchen RO than from softening, which is why the test comes first.
Salt-free conditioners
Conditioners change how hardness behaves rather than removing it, and they don't discharge brine. They're not the same tool. Read salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener before deciding.
Space, drain and sodium
A softener needs a drain, room for the brine tank and regular salt. Ion exchange adds sodium in proportion to the hardness removed; if that matters for your household, drinking water from a kitchen RO is an option. WASD's 2025 report lists main-system sodium up to 33 ppm before any home equipment.
If space is tight, Jorge will say so up front rather than squeezing in a unit that's hard to service.
