WASD's 2025 report describes lime softening at Hialeah and enhanced softening at Preston but doesn't publish a hardness number for Miami Springs homes. Measuring at your tap decides whether a softener is worth buying. Not buying one you don't need is the biggest saving available.
Private wells get no plant softening, so their results are often higher and the sizing changes.

Hotels, restaurants and offices
Commercial softening plants are sized to flow rate, peak demand and the equipment they protect, from dishwashers and ice machines to laundries. A commercial quote should explain the sizing, who adds salt, and how the system is bypassed during service.
Ask who handles filter and salt changes, since a missed schedule is the most common reason commercial systems underperform.
Ownership over the years
Most of the long-term cost is salt, regeneration water and periodic service. Resin lasts a long time when iron and chlorine are managed. Controls that regenerate by actual use, not the calendar, avoid wasting salt.
Ask the installer how the settings were chosen, since a unit that regenerates more often than needed wastes salt and water.
