What PFAS are
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances have been used in non-stick cookware, stain- and water-resistant fabrics, food packaging and some firefighting foams. They break down very slowly, which is why EPA required nationwide monitoring and set drinking water limits. EPA's PFAS pages explain the rules.
Which report applies to Miami Springs
Older documents may refer to a City of Miami Springs water system. EPA's database lists that system as inactive since December 31, 2008, so there's no separate city report to look for. Read WASD's report, which covers the main system serving the city, and EPA's UCMR 5 data published by water system.
What WASD's table shows
The 2025 report has a separate table for contaminants with recently set standards. It lists PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, PFHxS and a PFAS Hazard Index for the main system, each next to its federal limit, in parts per trillion with the highest result first and the range in parentheses. The report explains that initial compliance monitoring is underway, that compliance results will appear beginning with 2027 reports, and that systems must meet the limits within five years of the rule. WASD says its systems are taking measures to comply. For questions, the report lists 786-552-4738.
Choosing a certified filter
- NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis) certification listing PFOA and PFOS reduction.
- The exact model number on the certifier's listing.
- Replacement on schedule; claims apply only within rated capacity.
Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. Check any model's certification before buying, including anything Jorge shows you.
Certifiers' online databases let you search by brand and model number.
Testing at home
PFAS testing requires a certified lab using EPA methods. Ask which compounds the method covers and its reporting limits, so you can compare with WASD's table. Jorge's free screening covers chloramine, hardness, TDS, pH and iron, not PFAS. See home screening vs. lab analysis.
If you do get a lab result, Jorge can sit down with you and compare it with WASD's table in plain words.
Private wells
A private well isn't covered by any utility data. A certified lab is the only way to know. See well water in Miami Springs.
Ask the lab which compounds its method covers.
