What changed in 2025
WASD notes on its water supply page that it had added fluoride to the drinking water since 1958, and that it stopped effective May 29, 2025, following a decision by the Board of County Commissioners and state legislation. Florida law now prohibits using any additive in a public water system that does not meet the state's definition of a water quality additive (Florida Statutes section 403.859).
This page does not take a side on fluoride. It explains where things stand and how filtration works if you have a preference.
Why some fluoride is still in the water
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral. WASD's 2024 Water Quality Report, which covers the period before the change, lists fluoride's major sources as erosion of natural deposits as well as the additive. Now that the additive has stopped, what remains is the natural level from the Biscayne Aquifer source water. Future annual reports will show the new numbers; look for the fluoride line in the inorganic contaminants table.
Filters that reduce fluoride
| Method | How it works | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Reverse osmosis | A membrane rejects most dissolved minerals, fluoride included | Common for kitchen drinking water |
| Activated alumina | A medium that adsorbs fluoride | Performance depends on pH and contact time |
| Standard carbon | Adsorbs chlorine and taste compounds | Not generally designed for fluoride |
Whichever you choose, check that the exact model is certified for fluoride reduction, typically under NSF/ANSI 58 for RO systems, and look at the listed reduction claims.
Alkaline RO for a Miami kitchen
Living Water's under-sink alkaline reverse osmosis systems use a multi-stage design with a dedicated faucet and an alkaline stage that adds minerals back after the membrane. They fit condo and house kitchens alike. Ask Jorge for the model's certification listing so you can see its reduction claims yourself.
Questions about fluoride and health
Fluoride and health is a topic for your dentist or doctor, not a water treatment company. If you have a specific concern, for your children's teeth for example, ask them. If you simply prefer to filter, Jorge can help you choose equipment. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974.
