What changed in Miramar
In its public notice, the city explained that Governor DeSantis signed Senate Bill 700 on May 15, 2025, prohibiting the addition of fluoride to drinking water, and that Miramar would stop adding it beginning July 1, 2025. The city said the change does not affect the taste or color of the water. Miramar had already removed the fluoride feed at its East plant during the 2019 conversion to nanofiltration.
What the numbers say
The 2024 report, sampled in August 2024 before the change, lists fluoride at 0.67 parts per million (range 0.52 to 0.67), well below the 4 ppm limit. Reports covering the period after July 2025 will reflect water without added fluoride. Any fluoride remaining comes from the source water itself.
If you want to reduce it at home
- Reverse osmosis is the most common home method for fluoride reduction. Look for NSF/ANSI 58 certification listing fluoride.
- Standard carbon filters, including most fridge and pitcher filters, generally are not designed for fluoride.
- Whole-home systems for city water target chlorine and chloramine, not fluoride.
A neutral note
People have different reasons for wanting more or less fluoride. Questions about fluoride and health, including children's dental care, belong with your dentist or doctor. This page only covers what the city does and how home systems work.
Fluoride and your well
Some Miramar properties have used private wells, which were never part of any fluoridation program. Fluoride in a well comes only from the groundwater. If you want to know the level, ask a certified lab to include fluoride in the test. The same applies if you are deciding whether a well-water RO should be certified for fluoride reduction: decide with the number, not a guess.
Who to ask at the city
For questions about the change or the latest fluoride results, the City of Miramar points residents to miramarfl.gov/waterquality and customer service at (954) 602-4357 or [email protected]. Keep in mind that the report covering a full year without added fluoride will be the first one published after that year ends.
