What PFAS are
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are a family of thousands of chemicals used in nonstick cookware, stain- and water-resistant fabrics, food packaging and some firefighting foams. They break down very slowly. The EPA has set drinking water limits for several PFAS and collected nationwide data through UCMR 5.
Finding data for North Lauderdale
- The City's report: the 2025 edition covers radioactive and inorganic contaminants, disinfectants and byproducts, lead and copper, and microbiological results. It has no PFAS section.
- EPA UCMR 5 Data Finder: search by public water system. The City's system is listed on its notices as PWS 4060976.
- Ask the utility: call Public Works & Utilities at (954) 724-7070 and ask for any PFAS or UCMR 5 results.
The City's report also mentions that engineers have been consulted on the design of a nanofiltration plant. Future reports will describe any changes to treatment.
Choosing a filter
- Certification: NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or 58 (RO) with a specific PFOA and PFOS reduction claim on the exact model.
- Type: reverse osmosis and certain carbon block filters are the common technologies with those claims.
- Upkeep: change cartridges on schedule; an expired cartridge does not perform as listed.
The EPA explains how to identify filters certified to reduce PFAS. Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS; check the listing of any model you are offered, including ours.
Testing at home
PFAS testing needs a certified lab and special sampling bottles. Jorge's free screening does not measure PFAS. It measures chloramine, TDS and hardness, which matter for whichever drinking water system you choose. See screening vs. lab analysis.
Reading results calmly
When you find a number, compare it with the standard for that specific compound, note the sample dates and units (ng/L and parts per trillion are the same), and look for the trend in later reports. For questions about what a result means for your household, ask the utility, and for health questions, your doctor.
