What changed, and when
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| Before 2025 | NMB's January 2022 newsletter described water at the Norwood plant as "fluoridated for dental-health purposes" before distribution. |
| May 29, 2025 | Miami-Dade WASD stopped adding fluoride (Resolution R-370-25). |
| June 9, 2025 | NMB Water stopped adding fluoride during treatment. |
| July 1, 2025 | Chapter 2025-22, Laws of Florida (SB 700), took effect. |
The WASD date matters only if your water reaches you through Miami-Dade's lines.
What is still in the water
NMB Water says fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral, so trace amounts remain because of its presence in the groundwater source. Its supply blends water from the Biscayne and Floridan aquifers, and part of it already goes through reverse osmosis at the plant. The fluoride line in NMB's annual report shows what was measured; because the change happened mid-2025, read the dates and footnotes carefully. For a reading from your own tap, use a certified lab.
Which home filters reduce fluoride
- Reverse osmosis: a common method. Look for an NSF/ANSI 58 listing with a fluoride reduction claim on the exact model.
- Activated alumina: a specialty media for fluoride; performance depends on pH and contact time.
- Standard carbon: most pitchers, fridge filters and whole-home carbon systems are not designed for fluoride. They target chlorine, chloramine, taste and odor.
A kitchen-only decision for most households
People who want less fluoride usually care about drinking and cooking water, which points to an under-sink RO system rather than treating the whole house. Living Water's alkaline RO units are multi-stage reverse osmosis systems with a remineralization stage that adds minerals back for taste. Ask Jorge for the certification documents on the exact model so you can confirm which reduction claims it carries.
Private wells and certification listings
If your home uses a private well for drinking water, its fluoride level depends entirely on the aquifer and is not affected by any utility's decision, so a certified lab test is the only way to know it. Whatever the source, when you compare filters, look up the model in the certifier's online listing and confirm the fluoride claim is listed by name, along with the tested capacity. Marketing words like "purified" or "advanced" are not certification.
Our position
We do not take sides on fluoride and health. NMB Water itself recommends talking to your dentist, pediatrician or healthcare provider with questions about fluoride and dental health, and that is good advice. Our role is to explain what a given piece of equipment is certified to do.
