Equipment factors
- Tank or tankless: tankless units save cabinet space and usually need power; tank units store water under the sink. See tankless vs. tank RO.
- Number of stages and the remineralization stage on alkaline models.
- Production rate, which matters for large families or heavy cooking.
- Certifications on the exact model, under NSF/ANSI 58, for the claims you care about.
Installation factors in local homes
| Situation | What affects the work |
|---|---|
| Older single-family kitchen | Shutoff valve condition, drain line, countertop material for the faucet hole |
| Condo or apartment | Association rules, cabinet space, owner permission for renters |
| Refrigerator or ice maker line | Extra tubing run and fittings |
| Office or gym | Higher daily use, possibly a larger unit |
Running costs to ask about
RO systems need pre-filters, carbon stages and the membrane replaced on a schedule, and the timing depends on your water and your usage. On NMB Water, the carbon pre-filters do the work of protecting the membrane from chloramine, so keeping them on schedule matters. Ask for:
- The replacement interval for each stage.
- Whether service visits are included or separate.
- How much water the system sends to drain for each gallon produced.
See RO filter replacement cost and RO operating costs.
RO versus bottled water
Many households compare an RO system with buying bottled water or jugs. The comparison depends on how much your family drinks and cooks with, and the ongoing filter schedule. Our bottled water vs. RO calculator lets you put in your own numbers.
What a clear quote looks like
It names the model, lists every stage and its replacement interval, shows installation details and what is excluded, and states warranty terms. It should also tell you what the system is certified to reduce, so you can match it to what you actually care about, whether that is chloramine taste, fluoride, or a specific contaminant you read about in NMB Water's annual report. If two quotes differ a lot, compare them line by line: often one includes a refrigerator connection, a premium faucet or a service plan the other leaves out. See why installation quotes differ.
