Find the source in five minutes
- Run cold water at the kitchen sink and smell it in a clean glass, away from the drain.
- Do the same with hot water.
- Repeat at a bathroom and the outdoor spigot.
| Result | Likely source | Who helps |
|---|---|---|
| Hot water only | Water heater | A plumber |
| One sink, hot and cold | That drain or fixture | A plumber |
| Cold water at every tap | The supply | Your provider |
| Sprinklers only | Irrigation well | Well or treatment specialist |
The water heater
The Florida Department of Health's well water fact sheet notes that an odor only in hot water typically points to the water heater. Heaters that sit unused, such as in a seasonal or vacant unit, or that have a magnesium anode rod, are frequent culprits. A plumber may flush the tank, replace the anode with a different alloy, or adjust the temperature. That is plumbing work, and a whole-home filter will not fix it.
Who to call about the supply
- City of Oakland Park customers: Public Works, 954-630-4430 on weekdays or 954-561-6275 after hours.
- North Andrews Gardens and Lakeside (Broward County): 954-831-3250.
- Twin Lakes South (Fort Lauderdale): 954-828-8000.
All three providers disinfect with chloramines, which can smell like a pool, not like eggs. Describing the smell accurately helps them respond.
Wells and sulfur
South Florida groundwater can carry hydrogen sulfide, which is why an older irrigation well can make the yard smell when sprinklers run. For a private drinking well, treatment is configured from a test and can include aeration or oxidation and filtration. The Department of Health notes that sulfur bacteria are a nuisance rather than a health threat, but a drinking well should still be tested for coliform bacteria. See aeration vs. filtration and well water in Oakland Park.
After a vacation or vacancy
A common Oakland Park pattern: a seasonal resident or landlord returns to a home that sat empty for weeks and the hot water smells strongly of eggs. Water that sits in a heater gives the anode reaction time to build up odor. Running the hot water for several minutes often clears it; if it returns each time the home sits, talk to a plumber about the anode. If a precautionary boil water notice was issued while you were away, follow your provider's flushing instructions too.
Other smells worth separating
A bleach or pool smell is chloramine. A musty smell often comes from a drain, a rarely used bathroom or a dishwasher, not from the water. A fuel or solvent smell is unusual; report it to your provider right away. Jorge can help sort it out with side-by-side checks at the free visit. Call, text or WhatsApp Jorge at (305) 793-5974.
